Litter Quality and Microbes Explain Aggregation Differences in a Tropical Sandy Soil

چکیده

Abstract Soil aggregates store most soil organic carbon (SOC), but how does litter quality influence their formation? We hypothesized varying to facilitate differences in aggregate formation by altering the seasonal development of microbial biomass (MB) C and N, with MB driving a tropical sandy Thailand. Aggregate was studied long-term fallow experiment, receiving 10 Mg ha ?1 annual applications rice ( Oryza sativa ) straw (low N polyphenols (PP)), groundnut Arachis hypogaea stover (high low PP), tamarind Tamarindus indica (medium or dipterocarp Dipterocarpus tuberculatus leaf high PP) compared control. N-rich from led significantly higher MB, bulk than dipterocarp, straw, Bulk small macroaggregates treatments increased about 7% 30 weeks. Increasing explained increasing macroaggregate both, were important covariates explaining temporal variations stored themicroaggregates, silt clay. also fraction weights. With time, SMA only treatments, decreased other treatments. Connections weight substantiated importance activity for sequestration. By promoting longest time spans, medium-quality could best facilitateaggregate formation, increase clay C.

Role of Litter Turnover in Soil Quality in Tropical Degraded Lands of Colombia

Land degradation is the result of soil mismanagement that reduces soil productivity and environmental services. An alternative to improve degraded soils through reactivation of biogeochemical nutrient cycles (via litter production and decomposition) is the establishment of active restoration models using new forestry plantations, agroforestry, and silvopastoral systems. On the other hand, passi...

Characterization of Trapped Lignin-Degrading Microbes in Tropical Forest Soil

Lignin is often the most difficult portion of plant biomass to degrade, with fungi generally thought to dominate during late stage decomposition. Lignin in feedstock plant material represents a barrier to more efficient plant biomass conversion and can also hinder enzymatic access to cellulose, which is critical for biofuels production. Tropical rain forest soils in Puerto Rico are characterize...

Toxicity of iron oxide nanoparticles to grass litter decomposition in a sandy soil

We examined time-dependent effect of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) at a rate of 2000 mg kg-1 soil on Cynodon dactylon litter (3 g kg-1) decomposition in an arid sandy soil. Overall, heterotrophic cultivable bacterial and fungal colonies, and microbial biomass carbon were significantly decreased in litter-amended soil by the application of nanoparticles after 90 and 180 days of incubation. Ti...

How does litter quality affect the community of soil protists (testate amoebae) of tropical montane rainforests?

Litter quality and diversity are major factors structuring decomposer communities. However, little is known on the relationship between litter quality and the community structure of soil protists in tropical forests. We analyzed the diversity, density, and community structure of a major group of soil protists of tropical montane rainforests, that is, testate amoebae. Litterbags containing pure ...

Soil moisture and soil-litter mixing effects on surface litter decomposition: A controlled environment assessment

Recent studies suggest the long-standing discrepancy between measured and modeled leaf litter decomposition in drylands is, in part, the result of a unique combination of abiotic drivers that include high soil surface temperature and radiant energy levels and soil-litter mixing. Temperature and radiant energy effects on litter decomposition have been widely documented. However, under field cond...
